Não sou usuário do Ubuntu entretanto creio que o Sr. adicionou repositorios do jaunty e ele baixou todo o software de lá isto causou este pŕoblema, tente desintalar o mplayer e instalar atravez od pacote baixado. e eu removeria qualquer repositório que não fosse o padrão.

ola, desinstalei mplayer e ele desinstalou junto o smplayer e gnome-player depois instalei o pacote do link que vc me mando mas nada de diferente aconteceu!!!

segundo isto aqu : http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/i386/mplayer/filelist ele deveria enfiar um mplayer na pasta usr/bin, cadÊ a birosca do arquivo!?
