esse problema é de usuario e/ou senha errada.

execute o comando: getent passwd | cut -d \: -f1 e veja se este usuário "ubuntu" esta na sua lista. Se tiver, ele realmente não tem senha?

vc tambem pode tentar conectar como root: mysql -u root -p 'senha_de_root'
