O problema é que o Slack tem modos nativos para gerenciar conexões wireless usando o próprio ifconfig (criptografia WEP) ou o wpa_supplicant (WPA). Eu vou passar um passo-a-passo por alto, qualquer dificuldade me avisa que eu explico com calma. Faça sempre como root:
1) Rode o comando
# wpa_passphrase nomedarede senha >> /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
Isso vai criar o arquivo de configuração necessário.
2)
# vi /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf
Comente todas as linhas referentes a eth[0-4] caso você não use nenhuma porta eth. Procure este bloco de texto:

3) Reinicie a porta wlan0
# dhclient -r wlan0
# /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 stop
# /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 start
Isso deverá ser o suficiente para realizar a conexão.
Sempre que você ligar o computador você se conectará à sua rede. Para se conectar a outra rede WPA, rode aquele mesmo comando do passo 1 informando o nome e a senha da nova rede e depois rode os comandos do passo 3.

mesmo usando a configuração por você sugerida, ainda não consegui configurar o Wireless no SlackWare 14.2. Veja minhas configurações:
