Como habilitar o JIT?

Gosstaria de saber como faço para habilitar o JIT?
Pois a aplicação que estou rodando necessita dele habilitado.
O java -version aparece da seguinte maneira:

Warning: JIT compiler "jitc" not found. Will use interpreter.
java version "1.4.2"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2)
Classic VM (build 1.4.2, J2RE 1.4.2 IBM build cxz64142-20080122 (SR10) (JIT disabled))
