Erro com SDL no Ubuntu 7.10

Olá pessoal.
Estou há algum tempo com um erro de SDL no meu Ubuntu. Já procurei no VOL, Google e outras comunidades, mas acho apenas uma ou outra pessoa com o mesmo problema, e muitos codigos de programação C++ com SDL (o que não tem nada a ver com meu problema).
Bom, vou aos detalhes:
O erro é o seguinte: ao abrir jogos, ou mesmo o doxbox, aparece no shell:

Failed to init SDL video subsystem: No available video device

ou

Exit to error: Can't init SDL No available video device


Uso o compiz-fusion normalmente, e programas como Gimp, Blender, funcionam também.

Uso uma placa de video nvidea 7300 LE, e o driver restrito "nvidea-glx-new".

Já reinstalei a libSDL, o driver de video e tudo. Mas não funciona. E sim, antes funcionava (tinha Ubuntu, mas formatei a HD a instalei de novo).

Quem souber o que fazer para solucionar o problema, ficarei muito grato.
